Tampa Bay Rays Roster Report 2009-05-02

Manager Joe Maddon plans to be patient even though the team has struggled through the first three weeks of the season. If and when they decide to make changes, they will have some interesting options. In addition to starting pitching prospects David Price and Wade Davis, they also have Mitch Talbot and Carlos Hernandez at Class AAA. And if they to add some offense, or if they decide CF B.J. Upton needs more time, they could call up OF Matt Joyce, who has been getting hot at Class AAA Durham.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Evan Longoria took over the AL lead with 28 RBIs after a fifth-inning grand slam. Manager Joe Maddon said his success is the result of being better prepared this season, having a better two-strike approach and making better use of the whole field.

--1B Carlos Pena became the first major-leaguer with 10 home runs when he and Evan Longoria went back-to-back in the fifth inning. It was the second time they went back to back this season.

--RHP Jason Isringhausen, scratched from Thursday's rehab appearance at Class AAA Durham with an abdominal strain, is fine and will continue his rehab assignment as scheduled, manager Joe Maddon said.

--LF Carl Crawford drew a walk for his fifth straight game, a career high and another example of manager Joe Maddon's insistence on good at-bats."

--RHP Chad Bradford, recovering from February elbow surgery, looked good and felt good in a bullpen session Thursday and is ready to move to the next stage. He'll throw batting practice Sunday and Tuesday, and if all is well, he'll start a minor league rehab assignment, aiming for a late-May return.

--RHP Jason Isringhausen moved his rehab assignment from Class AA Montgomery to Class AAA Durham, but he was scratched from a scheduled appearance due to a mild abdominal strain he suffered while playing catch.

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Jason Barlett (left hamstring tightness) left the April 29 game. He was back in the lineup April 30.

RHP Jason Isringhausen (right elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He began a rehab assignment with Class AA Montgomery on April 20. He was scratched from his first scheduled appearance for Class AAA Durham on April 30 due to a mild abdominal strain.

OF Fernando Perez (dislocated left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27.
