Tampa Bay Rays Roster Report 2009-04-21
The depth the Rays talked so much about is about to be tested as they headed out to the West Coast hurting a bit, as backup C Shawn Riggans was on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, CF B.J. Upton was "day to day" after leaving Sunday's game with tightness in his right quad, and 3B Evan Longoria, who missed two games following a death in his family, had to be switched from third base to DH on Sunday after "tweaking his foot" making a play the night before.

--RHP Andy Sonnanstine starts for the Rays Tuesday in Seattle confident that some extra work in between-starts bullpen sessions on his fastball command will make a big difference. Plus, he's very comfortable at Safeco Field, with a 1-0 record and 1.26 ERA.

--SS Jason Bartlett put up some huge numbers over the final six games of the homestand, going 9-for-19 to raise his average to .429, best among AL shortstops. The key has been not getting too big with his swing, sticking to ground balls and line drives and not making too many outs in the air.

--DH Pat Burrell's slow start -- a .225 average with one homer and four RBI -- is not yet a cause for concern. Manager Joe Maddon said Burrell is still getting adjusted to the DH role, and historically is a hot-and-cold hitter anyway. "I really believe the hot stuff is coming very soon.

--1B Carlos Pena has a 12-game hitting streak since his four-strikeout performance in the season opener. A big reason for his success is his "quiet" swing at the plate -- very smooth and with no hitches.

CF B.J. Upton (right quadriceps) left the game after the second inning April 19. He was day-to-day.

C Shawn Riggans (right shoulder tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 10. He is expected to miss two to three weeks.

RHP Chad Bradford (right elbow surgery in February 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is making a good recovery and hopes to be back in late May or June.

RHP Jason Isringhausen (right elbow surgery in September 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He is expected to make rehab appearances in Class AA and then Class AAA in April.

OF Fernando Perez (dislocated left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is projected to miss four or five months because further exams showed ligament damage as part of the injury he suffered March 10. The Rays hope he will return in time to play regular-season games.
