Tampa Bay Rays Roster Report 2009-04-14

Tampa Bay Rays Roster Report 2009-04-14
One of manager Joe Maddon's primary goals the first week of the season was to get a better feel for new relievers Joe Nelson and Brian Shouse. He needed to figure out how best to use them, and when best to use them. And after seeing them both get key outs in one of the games in Boston, he felt pretty good about them, and the full bullpen. Maddon talks about wanting to have four relievers he can use in "even or ahead" situations, and said that with the way Nelson and Shouse responded, and how well long man Lance Cormier has pitched, he feels all seven relievers fit that description.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Evan Longoria's hot start earned him the American League player of the week award. Longoria hit .481 with four doubles, five home runs and 10 RBIs. He is the first rookie of the year to hit as many as five homers in the first six games of his next season and the seventh player overall to do so in the past 12 years. He extended his season-opening streak to seven games Monday. "The thing about it is he's utilizing the whole field," manager Joe Maddon said. "He's hitting the ball from right-center to the pull side; he's not just playing with one side of the field."

--1B Carlos Pena became the first player to hit three grand slams as a Ray. His six RBIs on Monday were one shy of his own team record for a game.

--SS Jason Bartlett homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Bartlett has hit three homers in his last 43 at-bats, including the 2008 postseason. Before that, he had hit one in 588 at-bats.

--C Shawn Riggans was placed on the 15-day DL after Monday's game with right shoulder tendinitis, a condition that just recently came up. Michel Hernandez, who filled in during the postseason, was called up from Class AAA Durham and added to the 40-man roster.

MEDICAL WATCH:

C Shawn Riggans (right shoulder tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 10.

RHP Chad Bradford (right elbow surgery in February 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is making a good recovery and hopes to be back in late May or June.

OF Fernando Perez (dislocated left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He is projected to miss four or five months because further exams showed ligament damage as part of the injury he suffered March 10. The Rays hope he will return in time to play regular-season games.
