--3B Evan Longoria was named American League Player of the Week after hitting .433 with three homers and 10 RBIs in the six games at Miami and Pittsburgh. Longoria is the second Ray to earn the award this season, joining RHP James Shields, and the first rookie winner in the team's 11-season history.
--OF Rocco Baldelli will spend the week working out with the Rays -- putting his 20-day minor league rehab assignment on temporary hold -- as he allows a sore right groin to heal. Baldelli was 9-for-29 in nine games for Class A Vero Beach; the Rays will decide at the end of the week when and where he will go next. --RHP Al Reyes (right shoulder tendinitis) said he felt good and would throw twice this week at the Trop, then likely start a minor league rehab assignment July 7.
--CF B.J. Upton has been a good fit in the leadoff spot, especially after his first-pitch homer Monday (the first leadoff homer of his career), but Joe Maddon said 2B Akinori Iwamura would return to the top spot Tuesday after he completes his suspension.
--RHP James Shields improved to 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA at home this season but is just 2-4 (6.09 ERA) on the road. He moved into second place on the Rays' all-time strikeout list with 376, surpassing Victor Zambrano, who had 372.
