Tampa Bay Rays Notes, Quotes 2009-05-14
--RHP James Shields starts Thursday against Cleveland with the Rays needing him to work deep into the game to ease the burden on their bullpen. "We just need him to continue to be himself, and we need the other guys in the rotation to start picking up a couple extra innings here and there," manager Joe Maddon said. "We have to take some of the burden off the bullpen at some point. ... We've just got to get some of these guys deeper and Shields is the right guy to get it started."

--LF Carl Crawford became the Rays' all-time RBI leader with a two-run double in the second inning Tuesday that gave him 451 for his career. He had been tied with Aubrey Huff, whom he literally passed on his way, as Huff was playing first for the Orioles.

--Manager Joe Maddon was honored by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a ceremony at the state capital Tuesday, where a resolution was read honoring his 2008 accomplishments.

BY THE NUMBERS: 21 -- RBIs by Evan Longoria against the Red Sox in the first 10 games of the season, third most for a Boston opponent over a full season since the 1969 start of divisional play, behind Seattle's Ken Griffey, 24 in 1996, and Toronto's Vernon Wells, 22 in 2006.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "(Evan) Longoria and (Carlos) Pena, man, they remind me of me and Manny. The one-two punch of me and Manny (Ramirez) we had here. It's unbelievable." -- Boston's David Ortiz, on the Rays' 3-4 hitters to the St. Petersburg Times.
