Tampa Bay Rays Notes, Quotes 2009-05-12
--RHP Jeff Niemann could have been skipped Wednesday because of Monday's day off, but manager Joe Maddon said the Rays decided to stay in rotation because "we like the way it sets up after that."

--RHP Matt Garza came up with another strong start against the Red Sox. After allowing only one run in his first two, he gave up just three (and two on sloppy defensive plays) over seven innings on Sunday.

--3B Evan Longoria has what even he called a "pretty unbelievable" 44 RBI through 33 team games, the most by any player at that point in more than 50 years, since Roy Campanella had 46 for the 1953 Dodgers.

--INF Joe Dillon was acquired from Oakland and assigned to Class AAA Durham to complete the deal that sent former big-league star 2B Adam Kennedy to the A's. When the Rays signed Kennedy, they agreed if he didn't make their team they wouldn't keep him from getting back to the majors elsewhere if there was an opportunity, and they kept their word.

BY THE NUMBERS: 21 -- RBI by Evan Longoria against the Red Sox in the first 10 games of the season, third most for an opponent over a full season since the 1969 start of divisional play, behind Seattle's Ken Griffey, 24 in 1996, and Toronto's Vernon Wells, 22 in 2006.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "(Evan) Longoria and (Carlos) Pena, man, they remind me of me and Manny. The one-two punch of me and Manny (Ramirez) we had here. It's unbelievable." -- Boston's David Ortiz, on the Rays' 3-4 hitters to the St. Petersburg Times.
