Tampa Bay Rays Notes, Quotes 2009-04-28
--RHP Grant Balfour is among the pitchers feeling they are close to top form following the long 2008 season and slow-placed spring. "It's almost like I wish last year just could have kept going and not stop," Balfour told "You get to a point where you get so locked in and you feel so comfortable that everything seems to fall into place. ...I'm starting to get that feeling back to where I was last year."

--RHP Jason Isringhausen completed the Class AA Montgomery portion of his rehab assignment, and is now expected to move to Class AAA Durham. Isringhausen had September surgery on his elbow, so the Rays want to give him as much time as possible. He can stay on rehab until May 19.

--Veteran LF Carl Crawford acknowledges that the Rays' slow start has been "very" frustrating. "We're in last place," he said. "We're not off to a hot start. We have to turn it around at some point if we're thinking about doing what we did last year. We can't afford to keep losing series like we've been doing. I know it's still early, but at a certain point we have to get it together."

--RHP Andy Sonnanstine called his performance "embarrassing" Sunday after allowing seven runs on 10 hits (both matching his career highs) in four-plus innings, with 12 of the 22 batters he faced reaching base. "It's tough," he said. "It's an embarrassing start. It's something I'm going to have to get through, and hopefully I'll feel a lot better next time out."

--LF Carl Crawford and SS Jason Bartlett are 1-2 in the majors in infield hits, with eight and seven, respectively.

BY THE NUMBERS: 1-7 -- The Rays' record through Sunday against left-handed starters despite signing Pat Burrell and Gabe Kapler to address that deficiency.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's not as awful as it seems. We're just not able to put things together with any kind of clumping where we can score some points." -- Manager Joe Maddon, on his team's extended slow offensive start.
