Tampa Bay Rays Notes, Quotes 2009-04-25
--RHP Matt Garza will try to tone things down when he starts Saturday, feeling he was too hyped up for his last start, a rough outing against the White Sox on Sunday. "I think I put more on that start than I have on a lot of them," Garza said. "We were in that slide and I wanted to be that guy and get us out of it, and I built up that start more than what it was. I didn't even build up Game 7 (of the ALCS) that much. I put too much pressure on myself and I didn't perform and it all came crashing down and (ticked) me off."

--RHP Joe Nelson considers the Oakland Coliseum a special place. He grew up and went to high school in Alameda, just a few blocks from the stadium where the A's and Raiders play, and attended a lot of games. "I love it," Nelson said. "Most of my dreams regarding baseball and football I envisioned happening in this stadium. And finally some of them are coming true."

--3B Evan Longoria's approach in RBI situations has been impressive, manager Joe Maddon said. "A real RBI mentality to me is a guy who is going to do what he's done the last couple of times, and that's drive the ball to right-center," Maddon said. "If they're not going to give you the pitch to power the ball to left field with, and you don't make the adjustment, it's very difficult to have that kind of mentality to drive in that one-run-at-a-time thing. What he's been doing more recently has been fabulous."

--LHP Scott Kazmir could relate to what high school star Patrick Schuster was doing, throwing his Florida state-record fourth straight no-hitter. Kazmir did the same his junior year at Houston's Cypress Falls High. "Those," he said, "were the good old days."

BY THE NUMBERS: .458 -- Winning percentage of manager Joe Maddon over after he managed his 500th game on April 21.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "With all the 'Dig Me Week' that just went on, it's about time we got out of here and just go back to playing baseball." -- Manager Joe Maddon, looking forward to going on the road after the homestand filled with Championship Week presentations and ceremonies celebrating last season.
