Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-09-17

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-09-17
Dioner Navarro kept the Rays in first place Tuesday.

The catcher saved the team in the eighth inning, when a near-perfect throw kept AL stolen-base leader Jacoby Ellsbury from stealing second in a 1-1 game against the Red Sox.

And then he won it in the bottom of the ninth when his one-out single with the bases loaded scored Jason Bartlett to give the Rays a 2-1 victory.

Tampa Bay, which entered the day tied for first with Boston, re-established a one-game lead in the AL East.

For Navarro it was the continuation of his breakout season, which saw him named to the AL All-Star team for the first time.

He ranks second in the AL in throwing out runners, nailing 22 of 64. He has also been one of the Rays' top hitters much of the season, and though he has fallen off some, he still ranks second in the AL among catchers to Joe Mauer with a .293 average.

As much as the hit was the big reason to celebrate Tuesday, the throw was critical, too.

"That was way bigger," reliever J.P. Howell said. "Obviously his hit won it, but (the throw) took the momentum. It was a huge momentum swing."

RAYS 2, RED SOX 1: Dioner Navarro hit a one-out single with the bases loaded in the ninth to score Jason Bartlett as the Rays scored their 11th walk-off win of the season, tying the team record.
