Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-09-12

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-09-12
The Rays have to become more efficient. They won two games in Boston despite getting only two hits with runners in scoring position, going an abysmal 2-for-31.

They are 4-for-56 in the first six games of their rugged trip that next features their farewell performance at Yankee Stadium.

And for the season, through Wednesday's games, they were last in the majors with a .239 average with runners in scoring position, more than 30 points below the American League average.

The issue isn't just the results, but how they get there.

"We have to understand the concept of scoring runs with outs," manager Joe Maddon said. "You don't have to get a hit -- if they're going to play back and give you the run, just take it, hit a groundball to second base or short.

"I think we're trying to do way too much in those moments. Multiple runners, we're trying to score them all as opposed to the runner on third base only. We've got to reset our minds."
