Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-09-10
The Rays snapped a four-game losing streak, won their first game of the season in Boston and hung on to first place with an improbable and impressive win on Tuesday.

More important, they may have regained the confidence to stay at the top.

As much as the Rays say -- and say and say and say -- how they don't consider any game more important than any other, they said Tuesday's was.

"It's very significant," manager Joe Maddon said. "Particularly here, with what's been going on, and where we're at in the race. It's a pretty significant win."

And -- after losing six of their first seven September games and nearly blowing a 5 1/2 game lead -- it allowed them to show their confidence.

Asked if his players believed they were as good as the Red Sox, Maddon replied: "Absolutely, we think we're as good as they are. We think we're as good as anybody."

RAYS 5, RED SOX 4: Dan Johnson tied the game in the ninth inning with a pinch homer off Jonathan Papelbon, and Dioner Navarro gave the Rays the lead with an RBI double, as Tampa Bay rallied to beat Boston. The Rays stretched their lead to 1 1/2 games in the AL East.
