Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-07-30

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-07-30
The Rays keep waiting for their offense to come alive.

But the extended struggles -- just 51 runs in their last 19 games -- could also be a preview of what's to come.

And that could, in a way, be a good thing.

"We are a very good pitching staff, and we're facing very good pitching," manager Joe Maddon said. "So it's going to be those kind of games. You're going to have to win those kind of games if you're going to play in the last game of the year. You've got to win them.

"That's how you win championships, winning 3-0, 2-1, 1-0, whatever. You're just not going to beat people up. ... At the end of September and into October, you're going to see good pitching, and you've got to be able to win games like that."

The Rays on Tuesday showed not only good pitching, with Matt Garza logging his first complete-game shutout, but also their usual snazzy defense, with Evan Longoria making another pair of highlight plays.

RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 0: Matt Garza's first complete-game shutout made up for another night of minimal offense as the Rays stretched their AL East lead to two games over Boston. Eric Hinske hit a home run, and Evan Longoria knocked in two with an eighth-inning triple.
