Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-06-21
The Rays have been working to get Matt Garza to tone down his emotions.

Now they have to make sure he keeps his pitches sharp.

Garza won his first start after his dugout dustup with catcher Dioner Navarro in Texas, but his second outing didn't go as well Friday night.

Garza gave up a pair of runs in the first, and then another two in the fifth, and the Rays weren't able to catch up against Astros ace Roy Oswalt.

For the night, Garza gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking two.

He said the outcome wasn't his fault. "They put together a couple of hits in the first that were seeing-eye ground balls," he said. "Just got to tip your cap to them. I threw well. I'm not going to call it a great game, but I followed a great game plan. I just left a couple pitches up and out."

Manager Joe Maddon had a similar view: "I thought Garza was really good. Thought he threw really well, exceptionally well. I thought he had really good stuff."

ASTROS 4, RAYS 3: The Rays didn't look to have the same intensity against the Astros as they did in sweeping the Cubs, and they certainly didn't have the same success as Astros ace Roy Oswalt shut them down for most of the game.
