Whatever momentum and confidence Sonnanstine accrued in his impressive previous outing didn't last long, as he worked just two-plus innings Tuesday, the shortest start of his big-league career.
The poor performance left Sonnanstine, a surprise 13-game winner last year, with a 1-4 record and 7.27 ERA.
Even so, manager Joe Maddon said it was not time to consider removing him from the mix.
"It's too early," Maddon said. "He just pitched a great game (last time out in New York). He had a tough night tonight, there's no question about that. But I look at health and I look at stuff, and he looked pretty normal. There's something there we've got to fix on a more consistent basis.
"It was just a bad night for him."
Sonnanstine called it "probably the most frustrating start I've ever had," but also said he felt good and that his pitches were good. "Just a lot of bad luck, I think," he said.
ORIOLES 7, RAYS 5: After his teammates scored five runs in the top of the second, RHP Andy Sonnanstine gave it all back in the bottom of the inning. He lasted just two-plus innings, and the Rays never rebounded, getting runners to second in three subsequent innings without scoring.
