The Rays are struggling, having lost four consecutive series and seven of their last nine games. They sit in last place in the AL East with a 6-10 record.

Manager Joe Maddon continues to preach patience.

"We're just not there yet. We're just not there," he said. "I think we're healthy. The guys are together. We believe. It's just going to have to morph into that winning streak, and it's going to.

"We're just apparently not ready yet. The guys are doing everything possible. The work's been great. It's just a matter of time."

The big problem has been an inconsistent offense, as the Rays were shut out Thursday for the second time in 12 games. They were held to three or fewer runs for the ninth time in 16 games.

Newcomer Pat Burrell suggested they might need something else besides time to get their offense going.

"We're making it tough on ourselves," Burrell said. "Maybe one of these games we'll turn it around and get on a roll, but we have to fight a little bit to get there."

MARINERS 1, RAYS 0: In the first inning, James Shields left a 1-0 fastball to leadoff man Ichiro Suzuki over the plate, Suzuki knocked it over the fence for the only run in the game. The Rays were held to four singles by Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and two relievers, and they couldn't take advantage of what few opportunities they had.
