Manager Joe Maddon doesn't like to hold team meetings.

But he loves it when the team meets to talk through things.

So with the Rays struggling to a 5-9 start and not looking good, or like themselves, in doing so, he was pleased that the players held a closed-door meeting in the clubhouse before Wednesday's game.

"We just wanted to get together and basically reassess and remind ourselves that we just want to stay on our path, and that's it," said first baseman Carlos Pena, who called the meeting.

The Rays then put together one of their most complete performances, producing a 9-3 win over the Mariners.

"It was great. Couldn't have it any better, could we? I was very happy with how everything worked out," Pena said. "Obviously we got an incredible pitching performance by (Jeff) Niemann. We were able to rally and put some hits together, which is great. And we kept coming the whole game; it's not like we backed off. Then the bullpen came in and did a great job.

"So that's perfect. That's what we're capable of doing. Most importantly, I loved the fact that the guys were enjoying themselves and having a good time out there. And everything else took care of itself, so it was nice."

RAYS 9, MARINERS 3: The Rays got a strong start from Jeff Niemann, who was perfect through four innings and worked into the sixth. And they got a solid offensive effort throughout the lineup, as seven players scored runs and six had RBIs. The Rays had lost three straight and six of seven.
