Scoring runs really isn't the Rays' problem.

The 62 they have through 13 games -- 4.8 a game -- isn't that far off from what they need to win consistently.

It's how they've been scoring them -- 32 of the 62 on home runs, for a concerning 52 percent of the total -- and, more precisely, how they haven't been scoring them.

"The part I've been trying to push and advocate over the last couple of years is being able to score with outs," manager Joe Maddon said. "Having more productive outs, singles, just really playing with the middle of the field in an RBI situation. We strike out a lot. The part I don't like is the strikeout with a runner on third and less than two outs. That's a bad strikeout.

"We're going to hit home runs, but we definitely need to do a better job of scoring runs on outs or singles and not just rely on the long ball all the time."

Though the Rays have some decent overall numbers, the flaw is their lack of production in games they've lost. Specifically, a .148 average with runners in scoring position in their eight losses after Sunday's 0-for-9 performance.
