Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-20

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-20
Tropicana Field was a safe haven for the Rays last season, who had the best home record in the majors at 57-24.

But it hasn't been much of a friendly confine yet this season, as the Rays went just 2-5 in their opening homestand of the season.

In contrast, the Rays had only one losing homestand all of last season, and it was their first one, and at least they won three games on that one.

"It's not very good for us, because we do make a lot of hay when we're here," manager Joe Maddon said.

The 5-8 record drops the Rays to last in the AL East, and puts a damper on their early season enthusiasm, but it's about the same way they started last season.

"When you don't get off to a good start, you don't get off to a good start," Maddon said. "If it happens in the middle of the season, you're in a slump. And if you do it at the end of the year, you're choking. It just happens to be happening at the beginning, which makes it even more glaring."

WHITE SOX 12, RAYS 2: Chicago's Gavin Floyd became the latest pitcher to silence the supposedly improved Rays offense, taking a shutout into the seventh inning as the Rays were held to eight hits, five of them singles. Their only runs came on a two-run homer in the seventh by Ben Zobrist. Rays starter Matt Garza started strong, but ended up allowing seven runs and failing to get out of the sixth inning.
