Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-15
Rays manager Joe Maddon considered it a preview of what's to come in the rugged AL East, a fierce battle of starting pitchers.

On Tuesday night, his starter, Matt Garza, was very good, allowing only two runs over seven innings and striking out nine.

But the other starter, the Yankees' A.J. Burnett was even better, taking a no-hitter into the seventh, although he too allowed two runs.

"Just typical of the AL East," Maddon said. "So many good pitchers in the division."

Garza overcame a rough start, loading the bases on his first 11 pitches but then getting out of it allowing only one run. But he realized what he was in for when he saw Burnett at work.

"Just try to outlast the other guy," Garza said. "Shoot, he had his stuff tonight, spotting 94-95 on the black. My job was just to keep it close, keep us in the game. I went seven, gave up two. ... I'm looking at the scoreboard going, 'Wow, what a night to have your good stuff, huh?'"

YANKEES 7, RAYS 2: After being held without a hit for the first six innings, the Rays rallied to tie the game at 2 in the seventh, but the bullpen couldn't hold it. J.P. Howell allowed one run in the eighth, and Dan Wheeler four more in the ninth, including a three-run homer by Derek Jeter. The Rays dropped to 4-4.
