Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-14

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-14
After pre-game ceremonies Monday to raise the championship banners and Tuesday to give out their AL rings, the Rays want to move on and concentrate on this season.

But much of what they are doing right this season is very reminiscent of last year.

"Honestly, I can't imagine it going any better than it did," manager Joe Maddon said after the Rays crushed the Yankees 15-5 in their home opener. "It really was thrilling to be out there. It was such a carryover. It was so much the last part of last season all over again, which you're not supposed to, I don't think, necessarily feel.

"But the way this all came to pass today, it made it all very special."

Left fielder Carl Crawford noticed the similarities as well.

"We showed a little bit of everything," Crawford said. "We showed some speed, we showed some power, we showed good pitching, we showed defense.

"We showed all the things that we do that help us win games. That's how we won last year."

RAYS 15, YANKEES 5: Everything the Rays did worked well in Monday's home-opening, banner-raising celebration. LHP Scott Kazmir pitched 6 2/3 innings to improve to 2-0, B.J. Upton marked his return to the lineup with a spectacular catch in center field, and 1B Carlos Pena led a heavy offensive show. "I think it just went perfectly," Carl Crawford said.
