Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-11
The Rays pride themselves on doing the little things right.

And when they don't, they have a much harder time winning.

Friday, they were thrown out on the bases, they didn't make all the defensive plays they could have and they didn't pitch well.

The poor start from No. 4 starter Andy Sonnanstine had to be most concerning, if for no other reason that it's a reminder of how fragile their rotation is.

Two of their top three starters -- Scott Kazmir and Matt Garza -- are prone to inconsistency, and both were on the DL last year. And their fifth starter, Jeff Niemann for now, is something of an unknown.

Sonnanstine gets by with craftiness, control and guile, and when he's off even a little bit he can be hit hard. That's what seemed to happen Friday.

The Rays have to hope it doesn't happen too often.

ORIOLES 5, RAYS 4: Two former Rays pitchers, Mark Hendrickson and Danys Baez, combined for seven solid innings and the Rays contributed to their own demise. They made some outs on the bases and had balls drop in the outfield, but the biggest problem was a poor outing by starter Andy Sonnanstine.
