Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2009-04-10
Winning at Fenway Park used to be a problem for the Rays.

After taking two series in Boston during the 1999 season, the Rays didn't win another until last September.

They took two of three in a crucial showdown then on their way to the AL East championship, then came back and won two of three AL Championship Series games en route to winning the pennant.

This week, they came back and took two of three again in the season-opening series.

"This is huge to come out here with two out of three," veteran Carl Crawford said. "We were hoping to just get one maybe, and not get swept like we did (twice) last year because it was so hard to win here. It's just a good confidence booster for us.

"They still played us tough, and they still have got a good team and stuff. I don't know if it's going to be that easy the next time we come in, but it definitely feels like we have a team that can come in here and compete anytime and get wins like we did the last two games. ... We didn't really feel uncomfortable like we did in the past. We're just going out and playing our game, and that's it."

RAYS 4, RED SOX 3: RHP Matt Garza picked up where he left off as MVP of the AL Championship Series, pitching seven strong innings against the Red Sox, allowing one run and four hits. OF Matt Joyce, 3B Evan Longoria and backup C Shawn Riggans all homered. RHP Troy Percival survived an interesting ninth for his first save.
