Even with the improvements they made, the Rays still need to do a lot of things right to win.

And as big a bat as they added to their lineup with the signing of DH Pat Burrell, they definitely still have to do the little things right.

They showed some important signs of that in their second game, and first win, of the season Wednesday. Especially after how bad they looked offensively in the opener against Josh Beckett and Co., striking out 14 times and managing just three hits.

On Wednesday, the Rays scored on a throwing error, on a safety squeeze, on an infield single and even on a double-play grounder. They also scored on two home runs, one a massive shot to dead center field by Carlos Pena.

"We did a better job, and we have to," manager Joe Maddon said. "When you face good pitching, you have to get runs with outs. You just have to be able to do that. You just can't go up there consistently trying to hit the ball over the wall. You have to work a better at-bat. You have to grind them out. And we've got that in our game -- it's there."

RAYS 7, RED SOX 2: LHP Scott Kazmir turned a good spring training into a good first start, working six solid innings to pace the Rays to their first win of the season. And RHP Grant Balfour put a bad spring training behind him to finish it off, striking out Mike Lowell with the bases loaded, then zipping through the ninth. Carlos Pena's two-run homer sparked an opportunistic offense.
