Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-05-14

Tampa Bay Rays Inside Pitch 2008-05-14
The Rays have gotten to the top of the AL East with a combination of stellar pitching, strong defense and clutch hitting.

But they also have done so with a hefty dose of confidence.

They got seven shutout innings from Edwin Jackson and were two outs from a victory Tuesday when Troy Percival allowed a game-tying homer to the Yankees' Hideki Matsui. But Tampa Bay came back and rallied to win in extra innings, and did so against closer supreme Mariano Rivera.

"You're looking for growth moments," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "That's one right in front of your face tonight."

Percival said it's an obvious feeling.

"I thought to myself, 'Bend but don't break,' because this team's got the heart to come back and do this, and I knew that," he said. "It's early, but I do love the fact that the way we're doing it is by, I don't want to say outplaying everybody, but not giving in to anybody.

"The way that we're fighting right now, it's something to look at and say this isn't a fluke what we're doing. We're a good team. We win close ballgames. Another team scores a bunch of runs we find a way to score more runs."

RAYS 2, YANKEES 1 (11 innings): Gabe Gross singled off Mariano Rivera to score Jonny Gomes with the game-winner as the Rays moved into first place in the AL East with a league-best 23-16 record. They blew a 1-0 lead in the ninth when Troy Percival allowed a one-out homer to Hideki Matsui.
