St. Petersburg chamber to re-examine baseball

Times Staff Writer

ST. PETERSBURG - The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce is creating another committee to examine the economic impact of professional Baseball in the city.

The group, which will be chaired by former St. Petersburg Mayor Bob Ulrich and Colonial Bank division president Lee Martino, will study the business ramifications of building a new Baseball stadium in St. Petersburg.

Chamber officials say the group will not discuss possible stadium locations or designs. That work is being discussed by a group called A Baseball Community, which was formed at the urging of Mayor Rick Baker and is chaired by Progress Energy Florida chief executive Jeff Lyash.

Rather, the chamber says its committee's focus will be on determining and explaining Baseball's economic impact on the city.

A similar chamber task force largely supported the Tampa Bay Rays' proposal to build a $450 million ballpark at AL Lang Field last year. But the Rays withdrew their proposal, citing a lack of support. The team says it cannot remain at its current home, Tropicana Field, through the length of the existing lease, which expires in 2027.
