PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) - Pedro Alvarez showed off his power, and Tom Gorzelanny made another bid for a spot in Pittsburgh's rotation.

Picked second overall in last year's draft, Alvarez hit a long homer in the ninth inning Sunday that helped the Pirates rally for a 7-7 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays in 11 innings.

Alvarez's three-run shot traveled nearly 450 feet to center field.

"That ball was well struck," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

After Alvarez's homer pulled Pittsburgh within a run, Garrett Jones connected off Joe Nelson to tie it.

Gorzelanny allowed two runs and five hits in three innings during his fourth spring training start. The left-hander is trying to become the Pirates' fifth starter this season.

"I'm sure they're starting to narrow down their decisions here in the next couple of weeks, but you go to the end," he said. "I have to focus on being out there, pitching well, continuing to improve and getting ready for the season. It'll get me to where I want to be and where I need to be."

Tampa Bay reliever Jason Isringhausen made his spring training debut in the sixth. The 36-year-old right-hander struck out one and allowed a run on Jose Tabata's sacrifice fly after Andrew McCutchen tripled.

Rays shortstop Reid Brignac, hitting .219 this spring (7-for-32), homered in the seventh to tie it at 3.

"We ran the bases great and played great defense," Maddon said. "It was just unfortunate that they got those runs against Joe in the ninth. But this early on in the camp, I'm not concerned about it."

Notes: Pirates OF Eric Hinske (ribcage bruise) will face live pitching Tuesday, but he doesn't know yet whether it will be in minor league camp or in the Pirates' game that night against the Yankees. Hinske said he "definitely" will be ready to play Wednesday against the Twins. ... Pirates OF Craig Monroe iced his right shoulder after Saturday's game and again Sunday morning, but said it is just some minor soreness. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Sunday.
