Carlos Pena hit a two-run homer after striking out in his first five at-bats this season, Evan Longoria went deep and Grant Balfour got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning by striking out Jed Lowrie.

In his final game at Fenway last year, Kazmir was on track to be the winning pitcher in Game 5 that would have clinched the AL Championship Series. He left after six innings leading 5-0, but the Rays lost 8-7 after Balfour allowed four runs, Dan Wheeler gave up three and J.P. Howell allowed the winning run in the ninth.

* Tigers 5, Blue Jays 1: In Toronto, Miguel Cabrera homered twice, Brandon Inge connected for the third consecutive game and Detroit beat the Blue Jays for its first victory of the season.

Zach Miner allowed one run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings for Detroit, which lost its first seven games last year and finished last in the AL Central.

The Tigers were beaten 12-5 on opening day this season and absorbed a difficult 5-4 loss Tuesday in a game they led 3-0 through seven innings.

Cabrera made sure the opening-week slump would not continue, hitting a three-run drive in the first and a solo shot in the fifth that bounced off the center-field restaurant at Rogers Centre.

* Twins 6, Mariners 5: In Minneapolis, Justin Morneau homered and drove in three runs, Jason Kubel hit the go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning and as Minnesota beat Seattle in the first start for Mariners sinkerballer Carlos Silva.

Denard Span hit a two-run homer to help Kevin Slowey survive a couple of rough stretches and complete six innings for the victory. Craig Breslow and Jesse Crain held the lead for Joe Nathan, who notched his first save.

* Royals 2, White Sox 0: In Chicago, Zack Greinke pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and the Kansas City bullpen was perfect, giving the Royals victory.

Greinke (1-0) struck out seven and walked three. Relievers Juan Cruz and Joakim Soria retired all nine batters to preserve the Royals' first victory of the season.
