Off to the other coast
After yesterday's game, the Red Sox embarked on their first road trip of the season and are scheduled to open it at 10:05 tonight in Anaheim against an Angels team that has just lost pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed in a car accident.
"It's almost numbing - just crushing," Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Obviously, our thoughts are with his family, and with the Angels. As much as we care about Baseball, at a time like this, it becomes secondary."
The Angels postponed their game with the Athletics yesterday, and as Francona got ready to board a plane for the West Coast, he said he had not heard that the Sox game scheduled for tonight was going to be affected.
On the hill
Boston is supposed to play three games against the Angels, then go to Oakland for three more before returning home. The pitching matchups for the Angels series:
Tonight, Tim Wakefield vs. Shane Loux; tomorrow, 4:10 p.m., Brad Penny vs. Joe Saunders; Sunday, 3:35 p.m., Josh Beckett vs. Dustin Mosely.
The trip will feature the debuts of the Red Sox's new alternate road uniforms. They have blue tops and what is called the "hanging sox" logo on the cap. The blue tops will be worn tonight. The new road grays will be worn tomorrow.
The hanging sox caps will be worn for all Friday night games this season, home and away.
Starting strong
Kevin Youkilis was 3 for 4 with a walk to continue the best start of his career. He had reached base safely seven straight times on six hits and a walk before flying out to end yesterday's game. Youkilis, who had two singles and a double yesterday, is 8 for 12 (.667) for the season.
Youkilis' numbers are in sharp contrast to Jed Lowrie, who was 0 for 4 yesterday with two strikeouts and stranded three men in scoring position. Lowrie is 1 for 11 (.091) so far with six strikeouts and has stranded five teammates in scoring position.
Jacoby Ellsbury is batting just .154, Dustin Pedroia .167, J.D. Drew .143, Jason Varitek .167, Mike Lowell .182 and David Ortiz .222.
Crossovers
There are five former Boston players on the Rays roster, and former manager Don Zimmer is a senior advisor. The ex- Sox are first baseman Carlos Pena, outfielder Gabe Kapler and pitchers Joe Nelson, Brian Shouse and Chad Bradford, who is currently on the disabled list.
The Red Sox have two former Tampa Bay players, outfielder Rocco Baldelli and utility infielder Nick Green. Green made his Boston debut in the eighth as a pinch runner for Lowell. He is the third Green to be a Red Sox , following outfielder Lenny (1965-66) and the legendary Pumpsie, who played infield for Boston from 1959-62 after finally breaking the team's color line.
Fill 'em up
Despite warnings that the Fenway Park sellout streak will be in jeopardy this season, this three-game series was a sellout with yesterday's crowd numbering 37,784. The streak stands at 472.
What's Bruin
Varitek on the possibility that the Bruins will play at Fenway Park next Jan. 1 - "It's great for the sport; I hope our field doesn't get torn up too much."
