Nobody should be upset by Swisher's words

Nobody should be upset by Swisher's words
If White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is offended that the Yankees' Nick Swisher called Joe Girardi "the best manager I ever played for," then Swisher's two managers with the A's, Ken Macha and Bob Geren, should be offended, too.

Towers' good 'pensmanship

  • Good for Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero, who is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in his first three career starts. The Jays have been heavily criticized for taking Romero with the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft — ahead of players such as Troy Tulowitzki (7), Jay Bruce (12), Jacoby Ellsbury (23) and Matt Garza (25).
  • The Jays, by the way, are 61-41 since Cito Gaston took over as manager last June 20 — the third-best record in the majors after the Angels and Cubs.
  • Both the Mets and Yankees were home last weekend, creating unusual social opportunities for players. Both of Sabathia's former teams, the Indians and Brewers, were in New York. Indians third baseman Mark DeRosa, meanwhile, received a dinner invitation from his Team USA teammate, Padres right-hander Jake Peavy.
  • Sabathia, by the way, believes that Brewers left-hander Manny Parra needs to reduce his repertoire. "If he would just throw three pitches, he'd be dominant," Sabathia says. "It's hard to throw six pitches, or even four pitches for that matter."
  • Asked which of his new Indians teammates surprised him the most as a player, DeRosa chose outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. Manager Eric Wedge, describing Choo as a true five-tool talent, says the native of Korea eventually will steal more bases. Choo, 26, stole 40 bases at Class AA in 2004 and 26 at AAA in '06.
  • A scout says of the A's Jack Cust, "If he got a little more aggressive, he might hit .300. He's so, so selective. I think he's selective to a fault." OK, but Cust's on-base percentage is .384 in more than 1,300 career plate appearances. The A's can live with his .241 lifetime batting average.
  • The Rockies need to fix reliever Huston Street, one scout says, explaining, "He steps further to the first base side of the rubber than any pitcher I've ever seen — it's absolutely hideous." Street, according to the scout, never gets balanced in his delivery. His arm fails to catch up with his body, leaving his stuff flat.
  • Stat of the day: Blue Jays shortstop Marco Scutaro, 4 home runs.

    Oakland A's, 3.
