Nady's injury rocks Yanks' outfield
The Yankees can withstand the loss of Xavier Nady. But if another outfielder or first baseman Mark Teixeira suffers an injury, the team will be in trouble.

While the extent of Nady's elbow injury will not be fully known until Thursday, club officials believe it to be serious.

  • A scout and an executive volunteered in separate conversations Wednesday that the Reds are not playing hard — an odd development, considering that manager Dusty Baker is known for getting the most out of players. The scout said that first baseman Joey Votto and right fielder Jay Bruce were the only Reds consistently running hard to first base. ...

  • The best evidence that Travis Hafner's fast start is for real: His home run off a 96-mph fastball on the inner half from Jays reliever Brandon League. Alas, the Indians are 2-7 as they head to New York for the opening of the new Yankee Stadium. Their starting pitchers have completed six innings only twice — and those efforts were by Anthony Reyes and Carl Pavano, not Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona. ...

  • Great sign for Rangers center fielder Andruw Jones: The Orioles do not want to pitch to him. They issued Jones an intentional walk to set up a left-left matchup between Mark Hendrickson and Hank Blalock on Wednesday night, and lefty closer George Sherrill also worked around him in the ninth inning of a one-run game Monday night. Jones is 6-for-11 thus far with three doubles, a home run and four walks. ...

  • A's general manager Billy Beane on shortstop Orlando Cabrera: "I did not realize until I saw him on a daily basis how good a shortstop and how smart a player he is." The A's, remember, went hard after Rafael Furcal in free agency, but ended up signing Cabrera to a one-year, $4 million deal. ...

  • Scouts are raving about new Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu, saying that he has changed the culture of the team with his positive, energetic approach. The M's went 6-2 without Ichiro. Their rotation looks revived thanks to a resurgent Erik Bedard, slimmed-down Carlos Silva and revitalized Jarrod Washburn. Their bullpen includes two young power arms, closer Brandon Morrow and rookie Shawn Kelley. The question, even after Wednesday night's 11-3 victory over the Angels, is whether the Mariners will hit. ...

  • The Blue Jays, another early surprise, likely will be undone by their young starting pitching, but the team's offense is formidable for the first time since 2006. The return of second baseman Aaron Hill, addition of first baseman Kevin Millar and emergences of left fielder Travis Snider and designated hitter Adam Lind all have made a difference, and third baseman Scott Rolen is off to a hot start. ...

  • The Orioles' pitching only figures to get worse as the season progresses; the team's top two starters, right-handers Jeremy Guthrie and Koji Uehara, are candidates to wear down. Guthrie has never made it through a full September. Uehara started only 14 games in his final two seasons in Japan, working mostly in relief. ...

  • Orioles center fielder Adam Jones has nine extra-base hits in nine games, yet at least one rival executive is unconvinced. "Everyone is making a big deal about Adam Jones, but I don't see it," the executive says. "To me, he has slider bat speed. You can beat him with velocity." Stay tuned. ...

  • The Nationals might summon veteran right-hander Kip Wells from Triple-A in an attempt to give their rotation the presence and innings that righty Tim Redding and lefty Odalis Perez provided last season. Wells pitched five scoreless innings in his first start for Syracuse, but all but two of his appearances for the Rockies and Royals last season were in relief — and he posted a combined 6.21 ERA.
